Gabrien Hits the Road

He was going to make a movie about it,

but the cost of film was too much.

He was going to write a book,

but the words fell

off the page somewhere

between Kansas and Mississippi.

He bought a tape recorder to retrieve

the words, but they did not survive

the transit from one side

of the microphone to the other.

They bloated, or shrunk.

They shook their fists at him

from inside their little cages.

He ran from them and hit the road.

The straightest he could find.

He traded his eyes for the ocean's smell,

and became the patron saint of the sleepless.
