submissions guidelines

Read what we've previously published; then send us your best work.

We do not accept previously published submissions. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but let us know if it's accepted elsewhere. 42opus acquires first rights (we want to be the first to publicly publish the work) and nonexclusive electronic rights (material published in 42opus will remain archived online indefinitely). All other rights revert to author on publication date.

If you have already submitted work, you can withdraw all or part of a manuscript, update your email address, and check the progress of your submission by logging in here.

Our response time can waver between two weeks and three months. The longer you don't hear back from us the more likely it is that we like your work: we're taking it out for drinks and conversation before making any commitments. If you haven't heard from us after five months, please feel free to inquire by sending an email to Managing Editor, Brian Leary, at brian (at) 42opus(dot)com or by filling out our contact form.

One story and two poems from each quarterly issue (begun with Vol. 7, No. 1) are honored with our Editors' Select prizes. All work submitted to 42opus is considered for the Editors' Select prizes. Learn more about the prizes.
