woman-eyes of an hourglass
notice an inner birthday party
opened up earlier in the apple fumes
& if he died I would hold love
in the cracks below the heart, a caged
hand waiting to enfold its animal.

Julie Doxsee, born in London, Ontario, holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is now a PhD student at the University of Denver.
