not sure. the sun. but we knew.
the afternoons became burdens.
something to throw away late
at night. along with certain
perishables. under the yellowing
light the pickle jar. then morning
peeled peaches. then a still
afternoon. another unnecessary
burden. we rid ourselves of. maybe
not. this time i let the sun touch
me. now i wait. and outside my
window a plane. also the leaves.
in another window in another
house. two dead aloe plants. also
the hot day. sounds. in every corner.
a person talks. the smell of petrol.
About the authors:
Carrie Bennett's first book of poetry, biography of water, won the 2004 Washington Prize and was published by Word Works in 2005. After receiving her MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she moved to Boston where she currently teaches in the Writing Program at Boston University. Her poems have been published in the Bellingham Review, 88, Phoebe, So to Speak, Boston Review, Indiana Review, Caketrain, Chelsea, Field, Denver Quarterly, Salamander, American Literary Review, and Interim, among others.
Kevin McLellan has recent or forthcoming poems in journals including: Barrow Street, Colorado Review, Drunken Boat, Exquisite Corpse, Hunger Mountain, Interim, Southern Humanities Review, and others. His chapbook Round Trip, a collaborative series with numerous poets, is forthcoming from Seven Kitchens. Kevin teaches creative writing at the University of Rhode Island (Providence), yet he lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
